Wolves is a 2022 Canadian crime horror drama film about a young social recluse who stumbles onto a series of unsolved cold cases he finds himself pulled deeper into society’s dark underside and must face his own demons to learn the truth.
Written and directed by Danny Dunlop. The movie stars Mark Nocent, Jake Raymond, Allan Dobrescu, Hugh Wilson and Rod Keith.
Apparently inspired by true events, Wolves is the story of a young unnamed social recluse who stumbles upon a series of local cold case mysteries involving animal mutilations and occult imagery. With no human connection in his life, he is drawn into the macabre nature of these crimes, which quickly turns into an obsession.
Finding himself unable to sleep at night he begins visiting the crime scenes and researching the cases. He watches interviews with a local professor who believes these cases are the work of a budding serial killer who will soon turn into human victims. As the details unfold and he spirals deeper into the mystery, can he find the killer before it’s too late?
“By turns likable and detestable, Nocent provides an incredible performance. With nary a word, he communicates volumes. His character steals, lies, and hurts people. But he’s also alone, harboring a darkness that no one but him could ever understand. Who can’t relate to that?” 8 out of 10, Film Threat
“There are some interesting ideas at play in Wolves. It’s also a feature that really uses its atmosphere to create an affecting tone. While the feature sometimes feels a little too sedate, it’s still a fascinating character study, a unique tale of loneliness that also examines the capacity for violence that may exist in all of us.” 6.5 out of 10, Horror Buzz
“Writer/director Danny Dunlop invests his grim, slow-burn chiller with a constant feeling of unease. The sense of isolation is almost unrelenting, from the snow-covered streets to the man’s bare apartment to his almost hermit-like existence. Beautifully shot and masterfully edited by Dunlop, who also provided a fitting score with the help of Rachel Johnstone and Janice Kwan…” Horror Fuel
